The International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) is an association of university chief executives from higher education institutions around the world. IAUP is a NGO (Non Governmental Organization) with formal consultation rights with UNESCO. It is supported through cooperation with international organizations such as the United Nations, UNESCO, the World Bank and other international organizations such as the European Commission and the International Association of Universities(IAU). At regional levels, the IAUP cooperates with NGOs in Africa, Europe, Latin America, North America, the Arab Countries, Asia and the Pacific. IAUP was founded in 1964 and for 44 years, regular public declarations and statements have been made by IAUP through its history, dealing with higher education, world peace through education, sustainable development and many others too numerous to mention, which have influenced world leaders, national and international policy and world opinion.

The primary purpose is to strengthen the international mission and quality of education of these institutions in an increasingly interdependent world, and to promote global awareness and competence as well as peace and international understanding through education. It is a unique worldwide platform that facilitates the exchange of professional experience through conferences, seminars, publications, and commissions.

As a new century unfolds, the IAUP has been revising and reformulating its charter. This decision is attributable to a number of key factors: the Association's membership has increased significantly and now includes university leaders from all the continents of the globe; the range and scope of the Association's activities during the latter part of the 20th Century have expanded; and the rapid pace of the global developments in science and technology will present university leaders with unprecedented world-wide opportunities and challenges for qualitative innovation in the early decades of the 21st Century.

The IAUP/EC's mission should be to create strong links between the IAUP members with European HE Instutions and organizations/networks that represent large number of HE instutions. Through such cooperationi IAUP can contributeto the advancement of science, technology and society in region.
